University of Utah BiOmanufacturing

The University of Utah’s Chemical Engineering Department has partnered with Denali Therapeutics to enhance its Deep Tech Biomanufacturing Program, thanks to the opening of Utah’s first industrial-scale biotherapeutics manufacturing facility. This collaboration is part of the Utah Workforce for Biotherapeutics (UWB) Deep Tech Initiative, which aims to train students in the production of biologics—medicines derived from living cells. The new facility provides students with hands-on experience in sterile biomanufacturing processes, preparing them for careers in the biotech industry and supporting the growth of Utah’s life sciences ecosystem.

Facility Features and Educational Impact

The new 60,000-square-foot facility is equipped for clinical-grade biologics production, including monoclonal antibodies and other cell-derived therapies. Students are trained in:

Sterile workflows

Learning how to maintain contamination-free environments.

Bioreactor operations

Managing the growth of cells used to produce biologics.

Downstream processing

Purifying and packaging the final therapeutic products.

Student Involvement and Career Development

Students like Maxim Balitskiy exemplify the program’s impact—transitioning from unrelated fields (e.g., semiconductors) into biotech. The program offers:

Hands-On Training

In a real manufacturing environment.

Bioreactor operations

And quality control.

Mentorship and Networking

With industry professionals.

Utah Workforce for Biotherapeutics (UWB) Deep Tech Initiative

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) to develop a skilled workforce in biomanufacturing. The “Deep Tech” label refers to technologies that are complex, science-driven, and have long development cycles—like biologics. The UWB program is designed to give students practical, hands-on experience in producing these advanced therapies, which are typically made using living cells and require sterile, tightly controlled environments.
